I understand the concerns some relocation buyers have about our schools and tax rates . Because so many of you have asked these type of questions I create a page on my website to address some of these issues at El Paso School Ranking.
El Paso has many public and private school options. With over 175000 students in El Paso and a population of nearly 1 million it would not be reasonable to compare our schools with the surrounding New Mexico communities like Las Cruces, New Mexico with its population of only 95K. The resources El Paso districts have are much greater than that of the surrounding Dona Ana school districts. The two closest New Mexico communities that border the west and north of El Paso are Las Cruces and Chaparral, NM. If you are hoping for a minimum commute to Fort Bliss or Biggs Airfield of 30 minutes, then Las Cruces may be out of reach as it is over an hour’s drive to Biggs. Chaparral is much closer to Biggs but it is a very poor community of about 14K with 1/3 its population living below the poverty line.
The closest metropolitan city that might be comparable to El Paso is Albuquerque, NM which is 5 hours north. In my personal experience relocation buyers will pay the higher property taxes to be in the El Paso school District. In fact, recent clients that were relocating to the area and had grown up in NM specifically wanted to buy a home as far west as possible but still within the Franklin School district.
NM may boast about having lower property tax but they have a State tax. El Paso County’s tax rate is different for each of the nine district so please see the El Paso County site for accurate information in that regard.
